Physiotherapy – Musculoskeletal condition
When you visit any of our Edinburgh physiotherapy clinics, you may be attending for up to an hour for your first appointment. This might seem like a long time, but it passes very quickly. You may be asked to fill out a consent form if you have been referred by your employer or are using your insurance. You may be asked to fill out a screening questionnaire. This helps us assess various aspects of your condition that may need further exploration during your appointment.
You will be asked about the problem that you are coming for on topics such as the history and description of the problem as well as how it is affecting you in different ways. You will be asked about your goals for treatment and what you hope to get out of attending.
After discussing the problem, we will look at the affected area and perform various tests and measures to establish what is going on. We often require to observe the affected area so we can see any muscle or joint changes, e.g. swelling, wasting, bruising or other deformities. If you are able to bring shorts for any lower limb or back problem, this is helpful. If you are attending for a neck or shoulder problem, you may be asked to remove your top. If you would prefer to remain covered, please consider wearing a suitable bra or vest top.
Full assessment usually means us moving the affected area and surrounding joints. If you would prefer not to be touched, please let us know. This is usually required to make an accurate diagnosis, but it is our highest priority that you feel safe and respected and in control of the assessment process.
Once we have completed the assessment, we will review our findings and outline what we think is going on and outline what treatment options are open to you. This may include hands on treatment, advice and exercise, shockwave therapy, strapping, bracing, orthotics, or onward referral. Once a treatment plan is agreed, we will implement it.
We hope you have a positive experience with us.
