Massage, why is it good for us?

Many people think of massage as a nice way to occasionally pamper themselves, but in reality it is a powerful tool that will help you take care of your health and wellbeing.

Regular treatment can have long-lasting health benefits.

Massage can help:

a) Relieve stress
b) Improve athletic performance
c) Relax tissues
d) Boost immunity

There are of course different types of massage from the very gentle (Swedish Massage) to the more targeted (Remedial Massage) or for those with specific needs (Sports Massage). But whichever category you may be in most people find it a pleasant and rewarding process.

Our therapists and some of our physiotherapists provide both Remedial and Sports Massage for our customers and whilst sometimes this may only take a couple for sessions to address a specific issue, there is a lot to be said for booking regular sessions. So much so that we have a better price to encourage customers to book a regular session.

Some customers like to use our voucher system to surprise family and friends with a present which they will really appreciate. But most are simply treating themselves.

But why does it help?

We are not completely sure how some of the effects work but the following are known:

  1. It stimulates sensory receptors in the skin and soft tissues.
  2. It stimulates the blood flow in the area.
  3. It does not shift lactic acid.
  4. People respond differently to superficial and deep massage.
  5. Physical contact has good psychological and emotional benefits.
  6. It reduces tissue tension.

So why don’t the NHS physios offer some massage?

Unfortunately the best (and cheapest) results come from patient education, advice , exercise rehabilitation and lifestyle change. So in a busy system coping with a high demand, hands on therapy is less of an option for our NHS colleagues. This has led to an increase in other providers such as sports therapists and a wide range of massage therapists. Unfortunately some practitioners are happy to offer the massage but don’t seek to diagnose or address any underlying issues which may require a strength training or flexibility program.

Our top tips?

  • Find a suitably qualified therapist who is happy to send you on to a physiotherapist if required.
  • Talk to them about the issues you may have.
  • Give them at least 2-3 sessions to address the issue.
  • Try to follow all of their advice and if massage provides you with the answers you were looking for then decide how regularly you need to attend to maintain your health.
